National Family History Award

At an Award Luncheon on May 30 2017, the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies, based in Melbourne, announced that The Complete History of Arthur and Rose was the winner of the Alexander Henderson Award 2016 for family histories published in Australia in that year. The judges’ comments were:

A beautifully presented book, with excellent layout and production qualities, copious illustrations, well-documented sources, and written with style and wit. The incorporation of separate boxes called Imagining the Scene added another dimension to the story. There was very little to fault with this family history and it is a very worthy winner of the Award.

It was exciting to accept the award and there has been more than one round of bubbles and cake in the family to celebrate.

On July 30, Tony accepted Genealogy SA’s Thomas Thornton Reed Award for The Complete History of Arthur and Rose. This award was for a family history book published in 2016 featuring a family from South Australia or written by a South Australian. At the presentation lunch, Tony gave a short speech about William John Jacka, one of the more interesting ‘characters’ in the book. Comments by the judges included:

The history is well laid out with, with an excellent Contents list. There are comprehensive details regarding sources, maps, end notes and an index which goes beyond surnames, and also includes places and events. Charts are well presented and do not distract from the text and the photographs, many of which are in colour, are well captioned and where relevant, indicate provenance.

We were fortunate to have our daughter and granddaughters with us in Adelaide at the time to help celebrate.
